Guidelines from REHVA

Air Treatment Recommendations in Coronavirus Times

The REHVA (Federation of European Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Associations) has made a number of recommendations for commercial and public buildings (such as for the office, school, shop, sports hall, cultural centers, etc.) that are equipped with an air treatment or ventilation system.
There are other specific recommendations for hospitals and care centers.

1) Increase the air supply and exhaust air
* Extend the operating times. Start the ventilation a few hours earlier and turn it off later than usual. Ideally, the ventilation should function 24/7.
* Provide as much outside air as possible.
* For toilet areas, the ventilation must function 24/7, with sufficient negative pressure.

2) Open the windows
* In buildings without mechanical ventilation it is advisable to ventilate by opening windows.
* In buildings with mechanical ventilation, opening windows can provide extra ventilation.
* Do not open windows in the toilet! This allows the air parts to spread to other rooms.

3) Adjusted humidity and air-conditioning have no practical effect
* The settings for humidity and heating / cooling do not need to be adjusted.

4) Turn off heat wheels
* Recirculation can always take place due to the build-up of the rotary heat exchanger. Virus particles that enter the supply air from the exhaust air. Hence it is best to stop the heat wheel.
* When using a twin coil unit or another system with a 100% guarantee of separate discharge and supply air, the heat wheel can continue to function.

5) No recirculation
* Avoid recirculation of the air at all times. Set the system to 100% outside air.

6) Cleaning channels has no effect

7) It is not necessary to replace outside air filters
* The size of a coronavirus particle is smaller than the capture zone of an F8 filter. So the filters can be replaced at the normal scheduled time.

8) Local air purifiers can help
* Air purifiers with HEPA filter can be efficient. Keep in mind that they are only active on a limited surface.
* Special UV devices can also be effective. They are usually used in health centers.
